Protecting Your Legacy: A Secure Option for Maryland Residents
The Law Office of Aisha Mohammed understands the importance of ensuring your wishes are carried out after your passing. While we don't store original wills ourselves, Maryland offers a secure and convenient way to safeguard your Last Will and Testament: The Register of Wills Safekeeping Program
What is the Register of Wills Safekeeping Program?
Each Maryland county has a Register of Wills office that provides a lifetime confidential service for storing your original will. For a one-time fee of $5, you can file your executed will with the Register of Wills in your county of residence. This ensures your will remains secure and readily accessible after your death, saving your loved ones time and frustration during probate.
How to Safekeep Your Will with the Register of Wills
1. Prepare Your Will:
Ensure your Last Will and Testament is properly executed, following Maryland's legal requirements.
We recommend consulting with an attorney to ensure your will is valid and reflects your wishes accurately.
2. Prepare the Envelope:
Seal your original will in an envelope.
Clearly mark the envelope with your name, address, and the last four digits of your social security number.
3. File with the Register of Wills:
Visit the Register of Wills office in your county of residence.
Pay the $5.00 fee and file your sealed envelope containing your will.
Important Notes:
Only you or someone you authorize in writing can access your will while you're alive.
Inform your personal representative of the will's location at the Register of Wills.
